Opportunities
A thought came to me during lunch today. How does one create opportunities for oneself? I've just taken a huge step in my career. I've run out of lives when it comes to moving around companies. This next one I'm moving to has to be for keeps. Or at least for a good number of years. I'm sure the next few months will be amazingly exciting as I have to move to Edinburgh for 3 months as part of the company induction/training. 3 months right smack in the middle of winter. Totally new environment and surroundings. A chance of a lifetime for me. I know I'm going to absolutlely love it. A real bonus considering I'm going to be doing a job which really appeals to my interests, matches my traits plus a nice pay rise. I'm really so incredibly lucky and blessed.

So back to creating opportunities. I didn't quite create this one for myself. It was a combination of sheer luck. A friend (ex-colleague) had applied for another position there and he told me about the company and the roles that they were looking to fill. How that conversation occured and the scenarios that led to it can be described as a long set of events that happened a certain way. I wouldn't have know about the company had one of those events turn out slightly differently. I may have passed the interviews and landed the job through my own merit but I certainly didn't create this opportunity for myself.

I've come to the conclusion that opportunities are as random as random gets. Kinda like meeting the right person. You don't go out and look for perfect love, it'll find you. To me, this is an important realization because just a few weeks ago I must admit I felt rather lost. I wasn't doing a job which particularly interested me nor paid me what I want to earn (of course whatever amount will never be enough) and I couldn't see anyway out of it. Life as a whole wasn't bad.... its just that I felt kinda bleak about my future as I couldn't see further than my nose on where it would take me. Fast forward a month and the picture is completely different. Bloody amazing, I tell you.

It's amazing how some opportunities fall onto your lap, surface via an email or through a phone call. I often find that the best opportunities seem to come through a face to face contact, often with someone you've just met. Sometimes, all it takes is to open your mouth and ask. You can plant the seed by exposing yourself to social events, networking sessions or even through sporting activities. Doing so increases your chances of meeting someone, knowing a widget of information and what not. Funny what cards life deals you with. However I'm not sure if I can agree with you about the perfect love. The 'love' that 'found' me ain't that wunderful thus far but I digress. Congrats on the spanking new job Mr Fang.

i think you're totally right!
opportunities always come at the time when you're ready for them and sometimes these things are just meant to happen (meeting the right person with the right contacts at the right time..)

you guys are going to have such a blast!

The successful person is the one who creates opportunities for himself and goes round knocking on door and leaves no stone unturned. Thats cos I guess all things being equal, the person who is hungrier and has a larger apetite for new opportunities will come out tops. You must of course be ready to tackle these new issues too. You have, through your years at crummy and unsatisfying jobs prepared you for this new one. So definitely dont look back at those times with sadness but that it has prepared you for this and now you're happier than ever.

Well I think you too have always been hungry for a better fit, new ways to move forward, and thats how you landed with this job. It came, you were prepared, and all things worked out.

And I agree with ching abt finding the perfect love, it doesnt quite fall on your lap. Esp for a guy. Like a job, you have to be patient, and be ready/prepared when you find the right one behind the 23420395820th door. And by being ready I think its impt to be happy by yourself first, so you can fully appreciate whats behind it. And most imptly, leave it in God's hands.

congratulations and all the best Andrew. Ed felt the same way you felt in the last paragraph (not knowing where things were going, etc) and it's really wonderful to see the men in our lives take on these opportunities. you and Jan are going to have the time of your lives there.

Congrats Andrew! Very excited for you and Janice.

I hope this move brings you the success and happiness you are looking for. You're far too young to feel bleak about your future! The world is your oyster!!!

Hi... if you plan on riding on the roads only, you can consider a road bike. You never know when you might want to try a triathlon, so that would allow you that option. Then again, no one says you can't do one on a mountain bike. With a mountain bike, it'll be more comfortable in terms of a more upright position and you could ride all over the place with it, even down stairs if you wish.

A decent safe bike would start from $800 onwards. Any cheaper than that, and you're getting into the Carrefour territory of bikes. Nice to look at when they're shiny and new but are basically made from the cheapest materials and components around. Not a good idea.

That only scratches the surface... if you have any other questions, just ask away
